I think I've broken something!

Right then, I've got an old laptop running Vista (stop sniggering!!). I was running the qb64_2021-01-16-02-31-31_6af5bca_win-x86 dev version without problem on here. The laptop had been getting a GUI error on boot up and the recommended fix was to install net framework 3.5. I did this and all seemed fine with the world, the laptop booted without error. I then decided to download the latest QB dev build which I did and installed it. Now when I run QB64 it nothing happens. It shows up as a running process in task manager (QB64 Compiler using 136K memory) but nothing appears on screen. I thought it may be an incompatability with Vista so re-installed the previous dev build. Still nothing. Okay, what have I screwed up? Is it a problem with net framework 3.5?

BTW, everything is whitelisted in Avast anti virus

Because QB64 is self-contained, no external framework you could have installed for any other purposes should affect its operation. Please confirm you have unpacked the new downloaded version to a clean folder with full write permissions, and also that you whitelisted the whole QB64 folder in your antivirus/antimalware software.

I know Cobalt uses QB64 on Vista - I use it on XP. It's definitely something very specific to your setup. We'll have to remove each ingredient and see if the allergies remain.

Also, you could try older versions. Check the releases page in our repository: https://github.com/QB64Team/qb64/releases

If I had a Windows Vista, I'd follow these three fix it steps.

1) Lift the lid.

2) Flush it.

3) Call a plumber.

Earlier versions of QB64, including SDL, did work on Vista. It was Windows 98 that got the boot, a decade ago. 16-bit OS.

I've just re-installed the last but one DEV build into a fresh directory. It's whitelisted in Avast anti virus but still no joy. It WAS working earlier today and the only thing I've altered is the NET framework. It's got to be something weird on this laptop. I'll have a poke around and see if I can find anything obvious. I'll try totally disabling the anti virus and try that. As I said though, QB64 is showing as a process running in task manager.

Avast is supposed to give you a heads up if it is interacting with an exe start up.

Have you tried running QB64 as an administrator?

Well, I reboted the laptop, turned off Avast, tried QB64 and it still didn't work. I rebooted again, left Avast running and this time QB64 ran. Oh well.......Good old Windows :-/

I'm going to try the latest DEV build now.

Okay, panic over. Latest DEV version is up and running. I really don't understand why I had to do 2 reboots but I suppose we are talking Windows here. Going to install it on my Win7 PC next. Now let's see if I can really break it :-)
