Terrie Ritchie's QB64 Game Programming Guide (as a book)
« on: November 03, 2020, 03:49:07 pm »
As I mentioned here (https://www.qb64.org/forum/index.php?topic=3197.msg124767#msg124767 ), I wanted to give folks a basic demo of how to download a website and turn them into a book to put on their coffee table.  The version I uploaded in that topic is less than 1MB in size, as it doesn't contain any of the internal images in the book.   The version here (https://1drv.ms/u/s!AknUrv8RXVYMh5AF_JA6I07tU4kckQ?e=twW9d4 ) is about 28MB in size and comes in at around 577 pages, once all the images are included properly, so I'm afraid you'll have to grab a version from my dropbox to get the e-book, as the forum has a 20MB file size limit.

Now, the process to get this far is rather simple:

STEP 1: Use HTTrack or wget to make a copy of the website.  Mirror it several links down (for as much information as you might want), and include images (if you want them as well).  Once you have the data you want on your drive in a basic HTML structure, you can proceed to step 2.

STEP 2: Load the index.html (the main index of the mirrored site) as a book into Calibre, or some other conversion software.  (Calibre is free, so why not use it, if you don't have something dedicated for the process to begin with?)  https://calibre-ebook.com/

STEP 3: Once the book is loaded into your software, chances are, it's going to be all packed up nice and neat in a single ZIP folder at this point.  If all you want is an off-line version to use on your PC, then simply make use of this zip folder.  If you want to actually create a book, find the CONVERT link in your software and convert to whichever format you like.  I used epub, as I personally like epub, but you can convert to mobi, pdf, ect, as you prefer.

STEP 4: At this point, you now have the website in a basic e-book format, just as you can download from my dropbox.  (Link here once again: https://1drv.ms/u/s!AknUrv8RXVYMh5AF_JA6I07tU4kckQ?e=twW9d4 )  If you want a paperback or hardback version of this book, all you have to do now is upload it over at https://www.thebookpatch.com/printondemand/ or Amazon Publishing, and have them print it and send a version to you.

Now, since Terry has been nice enough to make his work available for the public, I hope he's not going to mind me just zipping it up and turning it into an e-book format.  (If he does, I'll delete the links to his work at any time he wishes.)

This comes in as over 500 pages of his work, so I personally don't feel comfortable in converting it into a physical book and sharing a link to it for others to use to download/buy.  I might print out myself a personal copy of his work in book form, but I wouldn't feel right having it printed and sent to other folks without his permission.

Personally, I'm hoping that as the author of this work, Terry will take a look at this topic and decide, "Hey, why don't I take that final step and make this a published work?"  If he does, he can actually earn some $$ for each sale of the book from Amazon Publishing, or The Book Patch -- and, in my opinion, he deserves to earn a little extra coffee money for writing such a nice gaming guide for use with QB64.

But basically, the steps above are all that's needed to turn anything you want from a website to a paperback.  Just be forewarned, you may have to break things down into multiple volumes, as an encyclopedia, if you're wanting to download a huge site.  Terry's 21 chapter tutorial comes in at 500+ pages, with images and all attached.  The whole QB64 wiki in print form???

I can't even imagine.  :P

A simple screenshot of a single page (with the images included on it this time), and the automatically generated index/table of contents (whatever you want to call it) is here:

It’s there...  Twice, even.
