Windows 10-S Mode???
« on: August 11, 2021, 11:11:02 pm »
Well first off, I thought all Microsoft products were built to run in S _ _ _ Mode... but then once I quit laughing, I looked "S-Mode" up. It seems Microsoft has figured out a way to only let apps purchased from the Microsoft Whore Store to run on some of their  vendor products. Since we don't offer QB64 as an MS app, that would mean QB64 would not be able to be installed on one of these systems. Ah, but I read further and discovered there is a way to switch out of "S" Mode, at least for now. What's funny is they claim they came up with "S" Mode to provide better security, but they still highly recommend you run anti-virus software. The kicker here is the only one available in "S" Mode is Microsoft's Windows De-Friender!

"Yes, we recommend all Windows devices use antivirus software. Currently, the only antivirus software known to be compatible with Windows 10 in S mode is the version that comes with it: Windows Defender Security Center. Windows Defender Security Center delivers a robust suite of security features that help keep you safe for the supported lifetime of your Windows 10 device. For more info, see Windows 10 security."

So maybe at some point the [abandoned, outdated and now likely malicious qb64 dot net website - don’t go there] website should address this issue, with info on how to turn S Mode off, so QB64 can run.

I have no such system now, but I'm looking into buying another laptop, and came across this 10-S thingy. If my impression of what this S Mode is all about is wrong, let me know. In this case, it would be nice to be wrong for once.

S-Mode is mainly for students or large enterprise use, and it’s basically windows version of ChromeOS, which comes on ChromeBooks.

It's more secure because it only allows apps to be installed from the Windows Store;
It's streamlined to eliminate RAM and CPU use; and
Everything a user does in it is automatically saved to OneDrive to free up local storage.

The main place you’re likely to see it is if you buy a Windows Surface tablet, which they ALL come installed with.

Good news though: If you don’t like the limited features, you can switch from S mode to the full version of Windows 10 hiding behind it.  Navigate to Settings | Update And Security | Activation. In the Activation menu, look for Switch To Windows 10 Pro (or Home--you'll see one of the two depending on what version of Windows 10 your computer has).

Only thing to remember: Upgrading is a one-way street.  One you move to standard Windows, you can never go back to S-mode again.  (Which might be an issue with your school or office…)

Hey, nice catch to whomever edited the QB64 dot net part of my post. My mind must have been stuck in the past, that day. Oh well, it was nice to have hair again... and Windows 7!

I can dig that!

Well, if Steve was a treasure, would he be...

A) A Diamond... Only shines when under pressure.

B) An Emerald... Green with envy when he reads Pete's code.

C) A Ruby... Not as bright as a diamond, but hey, it's high time we had a woman on the forum!
