QB64 Discussion v's Discord
« on: June 30, 2021, 10:15:25 am »
I've been to Discord and have to admit, it is glitzier than this Discussion platform but other than that I'm not sure what it's purpose is? If it was to take away some of those very personal communications from specifically directed questions on QB coding and algorythms then it appears Discord is much broader than that. It is rich in coding ideas but seems to have added to the search burden. Discord also appears, and here I could be wrong because I've only gone there once, to be one long string of discussions whereas QB64 Discussions calls for a topic, Discord is a free for all. It feel like the quality or maybe that's just the quantity, of QB64 Discussion has dropped as Discord becomes more popular. I suppose I'm missing the point of Discord but it seems to be less valuable for historic coding evolutions and much more about social day to day chatter which starts and stops quickly and the coding info is gone. Now I expect this QB64 Discussion topic is likely more the Discord style than the QB64 Discussion style which is ironic.

@Dimster

The Discord allows for instant communication and replaced the off-topic board. It's not meant to replace QB64 Discussion, really. I choose to use it because it's far more convenient and there's that instant chatting rather than compose and reply. I develop all of my code there and share with others in the Discord to help me get it to a better spot before sharing here. It just makes more sense rather than one very long topic thread or lots of mail messages to other users. Right now I'm working on a very nice Task Dialog library but it's still only on the Discord while I test each individual aspect and work on generalizing the functions.
Shuwatch!

Forums and chatrooms have different purposes, and although forums are seen as more "persistent", the chatroom at Discord is fully searchable, as you pointed out.

It's not really the plan to have Discord replace the forum. But if you intend to discuss code, ask for help and you are in a hurry - or would prefer real time replies instead - use Discord.

If you intend to discuss code and expect more detailed replies, the forum should suit it better.

If it's off-topic discussion, it's not for the forum at all. In that case, it's Discord. 😉

It's not unlikely that we will bring forum topics for live chats at Discord, and also that Discord discussions will end up getting their own dedicated forum thread.

It's all for community interaction after all, so one may suit (or please) each one better.

This almost fell into off-topic discussion... but it's meta, so it's ok! 😂

compare to any internet forum and I'd say about 99% of all tech questions do not get solved.
