you can read as Richard Frost gets no results on his pc. And I get strange results on my Notebook at 64bit with Windows 10...
well going deeper to this issue I have tried to run Demo1 setting _glPointSize to 2 and it works normally while with _glPointSize  to 1 it draws nothing on the  blue screen! Moreover if you use Demo2 and set the size of _glPointSize to 1 you'll get nothing on the blue screen....

Ok under Windows 7 and Ubuntu 16.04 it runs ok.... so it is an issue between windows 10 and _glPointSize....?
I must ask to Bplus the configuration of his machine because he got the right result.
