IMG_1516.PNG - QB64
« on: August 30, 2019, 01:40:50 pm »
I'm running into an odd situation, ever since I have been using QB64 v 1.3 (64 bit) I seem to trigger the above captioned file when opening an image attachment in my email program. I have an older version of Microsoft Office Outlook (2007). Seems when I get an email from friends with a photo, like the one attached - one click to open the photo is ok but a double click triggers QB64 to open the above captioned file and presents a lot of hieroglyphics.

The easy fix is to just not double click but could this be an issue because my Outlook is so old or could I have made a mistake somewhere is my set up of QB64 program?

Sounds like you somehow altered your file associations to have QB64 the default handler for PNG Files.  Just go to your file explorer, right click on a PNG file, select “Open With...”, choose what program you want to associate it with by default, and check “use this application every time” (or whatever the exact prompts are).

Hi Steve - ya, it's not working. Explorer will provide the "open with" option but only provides access to other picture handling programs on my computer. There is also no option to identify specific formats like PNG, GIF, MPEG etc. I don't appear to have the ability to set a fixed preference or rule in Explorer on the handling of email attachments. Outlook itself does offer the user to tailor some rules on attachments but none which would declare a preferred program to handle a PNG file. I suspect Outlook simply defaults to Microsoft's own Picture/Image handling routine.

I'm at a loss to figure out how I could have associated QB64 program with opening attachments in Outlook. I have QB64  32 bit set up and Outlook never did associate attachments with it. Actually I'm not really sure that statement is true. While I'm thinking the issue is association of Outlook/QB64 64 bit only because of the timing. The issue has popped up after I downloaded QB64 64 bit but another interesting message I get with the QB64 hieroglyphic screen is a message to UPDATE QB64. If memory services me, the option to UPDATE was in the QB64 32 bit IDE and I don't believe that option is available in v 1.3 64 bit

Things which make you go HUUUM. It's not a big deal. When I have time I will go back over it all as see if I can track it down. In the meantime time one dab will do it.
Thanks again Steve for your suggestion.

Update hasn’t been around since early 2015, when Galleon dropped support for the old SDL version, so if you’re seeing it, something is quite wrong with your version of QB64.  I’d suggest a fresh download and install into a new, empty directory.  (Call the folder QB64-v1.3, or such, if you like.)

At no point should QB64 ever change any file associations, but if they ever do get scrambled on your system (which is really what it seems is happening), Windows let’s you customize them without much of a hassle.  I’m not certain which version of Windows you’re running under, but here’s a good walkthrough to how to change them in Win 10: https://www.lifewire.com/how-to-change-file-associations-in-windows-2624477

Google can easily find the same detailed instructions for everything from XP up, so if yours is a different system, just search “change file associations in Windows (Whatever)”.

Yes, I am running Windows 10 and that worked like a charm. Thank you very much for the assist. I was off exploring solutions in the wrong programs.
