Title: Problems with Moving around QB64 site
Post by: Dimster on November 01, 2019, 01:41:37 pm
The last couple of days I've been getting a timed out message when trying to log into QB64.org and moving between topics. To my knowledge there have been no changes at my end, has there been any changes at the site which could be causing this effect?

Same on my end, but here its most of the times the error "can't create secure connection" only a few times a "connection timeout". However, when I see it takes longer than usual, then I immediatly click the same link again once or twice, which will then almost immediatly load the wanted page. But my guess, its a problem on my providers side rather than on QB64's providers side, because it happens for most of the pages I visit during the day, not only to QB64.org.

Maybe we got a few Halloween Gremlins into our internet lines :)

Same thing is also happening with me.
Quick solution : Replace "https" with "http" in the url and hit enter. It works for me.

Solution I found was to go into my internet setup and expand the list of DNS Servers which I use.  Usually such lag is generated by one DNS service being overworked, so if you have a secondary DNS configured, it’ll bypass such problems.  Try adding some of the following to your internet configuration:

Provider   Primary DNS   Secondary DNS
Google   8.8.8.8   8.8.4.4
Quad9   9.9.9.9   149.112.112.112
OpenDNS Home   208.67.222.222   208.67.220.220
Cloudflare   1.1.1.1   1.0.0.1
CleanBrowsing   185.228.168.9   185.228.169.9
Verisign   64.6.64.6   64.6.65.6
Alternate DNS   198.101.242.72   23.253.163.53
AdGuard DNS   176.103.130.130   176.103.130.131

Yes, I noticed this particularly today!

Yes, I had the same connection problems. I don't want to scare, but also the NET forum always behaved so a few days before it crashed.

I also noticed increase in traffic, 82 today... I assume that will bog things down specially if this forum server is running checks.

Yes, I had the same connection problems. I don't want to scare, but also the NET forum always behaved so a few days before it crashed.

The reason why .net was often offline was because Galleon programmed the server to generate daily builds of QB64 even when no changes to the code base had been implemented. That quickly hit the file limit in his server and it took him weeks to clean up for services to be restored. Until he quit for good.

The reason our server sometimes times out is because when we started .org we set up a hosting plan as basic as we could voluntarily afford. We have unlimited file count but limited RAM. That often causes the forum engine to fail to read the database.

That’s going to change after December. That’s when our old plan will expire and I will renew our hosting plan with one that will provide us with more RAM to cope with our increasing traffic. All that thanks to our Patrons at https://www.patreon.com/qb64 who have been contributing so the Team won’t need to keep our hosting plan at a minimum.

FellippeHeitor - I'm not to crazy about providing any banking info or credit card info. If I get a few spare bucks in the Christmas bonus, are there other ways to send monies safely to TeamQB64?

Since the hosting is paid on my credit card, I’m currently the recipient of the donations. Patreon sends me the credit via PayPal, so there’s that. I don’t think there would be any 100% safe alternative to send money online, but both PayPal and Patreon seem quite safe last I checked. I really do not know of any other methods.

I, along with others, have a Patreon account to support Fellippe.  PayPal (of which I have an account), pays him a monthly sub.  That is not more risky than any other on-line banking, is it?
So I encourage you to do likewise, if you can: get him up to 100%.  It's a small sum for so rewarding a hobby.

Sure! Should'a done it sooner.

Is there a scheme to do one time donation (over and above monthly thing)?

From Patreon:

Quote
Can I make a one-time payment?

While one-time payments are a great feature idea, it's important we stay true to what Patreon is all about: Building a membership platform for creators.

All patreon memberships are currently on recurring monthly billing cadence. You can learn more about how creators can bill their patrons, here.

For now, the best way for a patron to subscribe to a creator with a one-time payment is to become a patron then simply cancel their membership after they have been successfully billed. You'll know when you have been billed because you'll receive an email confirmation stating your payment has successfully processed.

Additionally, you can check your billing history to see when you were billed and if it has successfully processed.

Oh bplus, you are, as ever, very kind.  My contributions to programming here are very small compared to the huge wealth of material in the Programs Section.  And I have virtually no useful contributions in other sections: I am very much a user of QB64 without any skill to pass anything on.  But out of vanity I like to think that my programs are homophonic to my site nickname.  Is it not a wonder that even though our individual DNA is so very similar, we can all be so very different?  Much more of this rubbish and Fellippe will have to have a new Section: "Philosophy"!

So Fellippe - the monies - is it any currencies or just US dollars? And it actually goes to Patreon and not directly to you? And it can only take place after joining as a member and receiving a Bill. And that Bill only transacts via PayPal? Sorry about all these questions but is there an address I can simply send a money order to and a person to make payment to?

Hi Dimster,

I was wondering also if it was just through PayPal. Nope, they take all major credit cards from around the world. I figure if a problem arises you can work with card company to resolve issues.

Oh good!  Now we know his address, it's all round to Fellippe's for a bite to eat and a pint.  Steve will be giving lectures on everything you need to know.  Ashish and SierraKen will be dashing off large quantities of code.  Pete will be moaning about the Democrats (and any other subject that comes into his head).  STxAxTIC will be dynamic.  bplus will be assisting everybody in what they're doing.  TempodiBasic (in his humble opinion) will be insisting that moral and other principles are strictly followed.  Qwerkey will be showing off again with his over-rated philological skills.  Cobalt will be blue (but looking forward to being 60 when he's highly reactive).  Terry Ritchie will make a most welcome but sadly fleeting appearance.  A splendid time is guaranteed for all!

Not my home address after all, but it's a small town and everyone will point you to the right direction anyway.

Not my home address
Didn't think it was, but had to use it for the silly jokes!

Hi.
I have a problem. Unable to connect (qb64.org does not load at all) when using mobile data and mobile internet. I tried it from two mobile phones (with the same provider).  QB64.org works normally from a fixed Internet connection. Earlier it work from both places.
Bug is on your place  (this is what my mobile operator says), because i already talk about this with my operator, and is not possible to connect to qb64.org with mobile data. Can you, please verify it?

Hard to verify. I load it with mobile data with no issues. However:
1- we're in different countries;
2- use different phones;
3- pay different carriers for data plans.

Hopefully it's just a temporary issue. All systems report ok from our provider right now.

Fellippe, thank you for your reply.  I called the operator again and he confirmed the error on their side. (interesting, isn't it?) IT technician Vodafone is now addressing this and will call me back. This is the perfect recipe for raising blood pressure.....

Fellippe, I spent the whole day addressing the problem of unavailability of qb64.org/forum by phone with the mobile operator Vodafone.cz. Portal.qb64.org is always loaded, but qb64.org/forum is unavailable.
I can't think of any other solution, so I want to ask you, if you have time, to ask the goDaddy.Com, that hosts QB64.ORG, if the blocking for Vodafone.cz is applyed. Administrator this forum and goDaddy.com customer has permission to determine this. I asked there. According to the Czech national mobile operator, Vodafone.CZ is blocked for QB64.ORG/forum. I would like to verify this statement. You are the only one who can verify this when you are the one who pays for the operation of this server. Last month everything worked smoothly. It is very embarrassing to go to the forum through proxy servers when I want to use a mobile network. Thank you for your time.
