Title: I don't like the new QB64 forum logo...
Post by: Pete on April 02, 2019, 12:37:38 am
It makes my av-ee-tar, when it appears underneath it,  look short.

I may be throwing the cat amongst the pigeons with this one....

We, as mere members of this or any other forum, as a rule of thumb, have little to no say in how the forum appears... Generally speaking... and as such we accept what the site designer has to offer.... I am going out on a limb and say that this is not a rule that is "set in stone" for this site....

May I make an observation? If we find any particular part of this site, shall we say less than appealing, then the suggestion to change that part be accompanied by a recommended solution? Pete's concerns about the logo would be strengthened if a sample of a possible replacement were to be included with the concern... Just a thought.

Old logo: pure text-based characters, as DOS used to do and whence QB64 is derived.  It suggests that QB64 is a DOS & text only platform.

New logo: DOS & text-based QB64 logo combined with graphics.  This is what QB64 is (and ain't it marvellous!).

It should appeal to younger persons, as well?

So we like it.

Johnno, we aren't a democracy, and Fellippe, Luke & Bill do all the work and so it shouldn't be.

I realise the site is not a democracy, but we can still change the minds of those that lead, can we not?

Was the logo created with QB64?

My only question is:  Where’s the bee?  :P

The bee has never been on qb64.org.

Was the logo created with QB64?

Nope :-)

If we find any particular part of this site, shall we say less than appealing, then the suggestion to change that part be accompanied by a recommended solution?

Suggestions with solutions are always welcome!

I gotta say I aimed at an 80s "there's too much" aesthetics with this. What you see at the top of the forum, the background of QB64.org (http://QB64.org) and across our social media presence (twitter (http://www.twitter.com/qb64team), facebook (http://www.facebook.com/qb64team), patreon (https://www.patreon.com/qb64)) is bits of that general idea.

Above all I gotta say it's not actually a new logo, but the same logo by TheBOB. We've just made the presentation a tad more colorful for the web.

Also,

Pete's concerns about the logo would be strengthened if a sample of a possible replacement were to be included with the concern... Just a thought.

Pete is, if I know him a bit, far from saying he really doesn't like the new logo cause it makes his look short :-)

Sorry, when it comes to comedy, I have to keep the bar low... so people can see me on stage! Yes, in Fell's response, the operative word is "bit." It's a bit. My mind always goes to comedy, first. I actually like the logo just fine, but because it's larger than its predecessor, the first thing that struck me was it made my avatar look even short-ER. I mean if I was really that concerned about Sam's height, I just do something about his damn hat... or give him legs, but not complain about a logo. So now that April Fools Day is over, mosey on past it ya carnsarn varmints!

I am thinking somebody (Ashish?) could make a 3D spinning QB64 cube with the Forever background. Ashish already has a nice one in 3D OpenWorld Mountains: https://www.qb64.org/forum/index.php?topic=1139.15

Maybe for the next version. ;-))

I do like like the transparent layering, kind of symbolic of QB64's development and works.

@ Mark, I lie the transparent effect, too. Maybe a bit less background though?

@ Jack, I liked the old logo too, but branding changes over time. I'm even thinking of modifying my avatar... maybe a BIGGER hat?

Finicky guys! I like the new logo, and I also like its sci-fi-inspired background, flying through some foreboding magnetic storm in the Delta Quadrant. I say, keep it as is.

You will need additional images file for program to run.
@Cobalt : The program also shows using texture on cube in an easy way. Hope it helps.

Just out of curiosity could the blue background on cube be made slightly transparent?

The word branding comes from what they did to cows. You burn it in once, it never changes. :)

Sorry guys but I really don't care for the new logo. BASIC should be simple and I just don't get that from the new logo. It does look nice though, personally just don't care for it. Maybe it will grow on me?

Thanks. You can use it freely. I made the "blue" background transparent. You can control the extent of transparency from line 18.

Same images file which were in attachment in my previous reply are required for both of the below code.

I've mellowed in my older age, but I think I'm going to have to go back in time. I actually wanted to post the new logo would look better with a transparent background, and WOW, some 1 of 3 tried that idea out, and it looks GREAT! Sorry I didn't recommend it in the first place. Also, you may want to consider always having a release message next to it, because that looks amazing, too.

Nice work guy(s),

Pete

Oh, I do have to add one more observation. About the tag line next to the logo. You guys have it as: "Get it at the new QB64.org" OK, that may make newcomers to the forum think this site is closing down and they need to click that part of the link to visit the "new" site. Anyway, I clicked it wondering if it would take me to the download page, but it just went to the forum home page. So, if that could be modified to something like: Click here to download! or whatever, and would to the download page, in my opinion, that would be an improvement.

I hope you guys take constructive criticism better at this "new" QB64.org site. I'm still ordering packages of Preparation H from Amazon to deal with the lightning bolt strike over my last critique, of the "old" QB64.org.

Pete :D

Dang Pete, that's 2 in a row I agree with you. :D

I too was a little concerned about a new Org site when I read the tag line. I bet author was rightly excited about the new look and layout. :)

Question:  What the heck is the two dots that hover and stay in the middle of the far right screen?  They seem selectable, but there’s no text to them, and nothing that they do (as far as I can tell).

The dots are the sections, About and Download. Clicking them has the same effect of choosing said options from top menu. Steve must be using his iPad, I suppose.

Actually, it's 2 in a column, but whose counting?
